What are the essential checks before my first train journey abroad?

Confirm that your ticket is issued, the full departure station, boarding date and time, valid identity document, boarding document and transport to the station. Save your order number and documents offline. Collection, security, gates, platforms and baggage rules vary; follow your order and official station or railway notices.

1. Prepare offline copies the day before

Do not wait until you reach the station to open your order for the first time. The day before, confirm its status, station, time and boarding documents, and save the essential information on your phone.

  • Your booking is confirmed and is not awaiting ticket issuance or processing.
  • The departure date, full station names and train number are correct.
  • You know whether to board using an e-ticket, QR code or paper ticket.
  • Your documents match your order and are with you.
  • The station address, support contact and order number are saved offline.
About screenshots

Screenshots are useful backups, but some changing QR codes must be shown on the original page. Read the order instructions before choosing a screenshot, PDF or live page.

2. Search maps using the full station name

“Go to the railway station” is not a precise enough plan. Large cities often have several stations, with names in Chinese, English and the local language. Copy the full station name from your order, then check map photos, the address and route direction.

How early should I arrive?

There is no universal arrival time. A short local journey, an identity-checked service, a train requiring ticket collection and an international train can need very different amounts of time. Start with the order or railway guidance and add a buffer if the station is unfamiliar.

3. At the station, check collection, security, ticket checks and the platform

Not every station has all these steps, but this sequence can help you find your way:

  1. Ticket collection: If your order requires collection or exchange, find the specified counter or machine first.
  2. Security: Some stations check baggage and identity documents before entry.
  3. Ticket check: Follow information screens, gates and staff directions.
  4. Platform: Check the train number, direction and departure time, not just the destination.

If you cannot read the local language, show staff the train number, time and station names on your ticket rather than relying only on a spoken destination.

4. Confirm your carriage and seat after boarding

Long-distance trains may stop only briefly. Find the correct carriage before boarding rather than spending that time rearranging baggage on the platform. Once inside, find the seat or berth shown on your ticket.

  • Do not block aisles or doors with baggage.
  • Keep your passport, phone, wallet and other valuables secure.
  • For an overnight train, bring warm clothing and essential toiletries.
  • Set an arrival reminder and watch for notices about changed stops or transfers.

5. A final 30-second check before leaving

CategoryWhat to confirm
Identity documentsA valid identity document matching your order
TicketThe original boarding document, an offline backup and your order number
RouteFull station name, entrance and travel time to the station
TimeDeparture date, time and a reasonable buffer
BaggageBaggage meets the rules; valuables stay with you

You do not need to remember every rule. Know where to find a reliable answer: start with your order, check official station information, then ask railway staff or customer support.

Frequently asked questions

There is no fixed time that suits every country and station. Allow for collection, security, identity checks and boarding requirements in your order, and follow station and railway notices on the day.

It is better to save the order number, e-ticket or QR code and travel instructions offline, and carry the required identity document. Follow your particular order's instructions for how to use them.

Not necessarily. Platforms, gates and carriage information may change at short notice. On departure day, check your order, station displays, announcements and staff instructions.
