What baggage can I take on trains abroad, and how should I arrange large items?
Before booking, check limits on baggage quantity, size and weight, storage arrangements and prohibited or restricted items. For oversized bags, bicycles or special luggage, check whether reservations, designated seats or checked baggage arrangements are required. Railway rules differ from airline rules. Follow the selected train, order and operator instructions.
Measure your baggage instead of relying on a “cabin bag” label
An airline's cabin-bag label does not prove compliance with rail rules. Measure each item's external dimensions and weight and count your bags, then check the relevant railway's guidance. Confirm pushchairs, sports equipment, instruments and bicycles separately.
Check where baggage can be stored
Overhead racks, carriage-end areas and dedicated storage can differ. Do not block aisles, doors or safety equipment, and do not assume every carriage has the same space. For a group, consider each person's baggage and ability to carry it.
Selected Shinkansen routes in Japan: the 160 cm and 250 cm limits
These reservation rules apply to the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen, rather than every train in Japan. For ordinary bags with length, width and height totalling more than 160 cm and no more than 250 cm, reserve a seat with an oversized baggage space. Bags with total dimensions exceeding 250 cm cannot be brought on board.
Baggage with total dimensions of 160 cm or less does not require a reservation under this oversized-baggage rule, but must still meet limits on number, weight and safe storage. JR Central's general free allowance is up to two items, each weighing no more than 30 kg, measuring no more than 250 cm in total dimensions and no more than 2 m on its longest side. Small personal items such as handbags and umbrellas are treated separately under the official guidance.
Pushchairs, musical instruments and sports equipment have separate rules; using a designated oversized baggage space still requires the corresponding reservation. These seats cost the same as other reserved seats in the same class, but check any booking-channel service fees separately. Before paying, confirm that your order actually includes the required arrangement; a “large baggage” note alone is not enough.
Arrange oversized baggage when booking
Some trains require a particular seat, reservation or other arrangement. If you have a large item, check when choosing your train and seat rather than leaving it until arrival at the station.
Size limits, fees, reservations and prohibited-item rules may change. This page does not replace the operator's rules; recheck your order and the latest official guidance before travelling.
Frequently asked questions
Not necessarily. Airline and railway rules differ. Check the size, weight, number of items, storage and prohibited-item requirements for your specific railway, train and order.
This is not guaranteed. Storage depends on the train layout, seat and railway rules. Oversized baggage may require a designated seat, reservation or other arrangement.
Do not assume so. Special items may have packaging, size, reservation or other restrictions. Read the relevant operator's guidance before booking.
